Millie Beardsley from Minster Law on her secondment with ACSO as a trainee solicitor

Posted on Thu, 01/08/2024

For the past eight months, I have had the privilege of being seconded to the Association for Consumer Support Organisation (ASCO), an experience that has enriched my professional journey. Working with ASCO, which is dedicated to advocating for consumer rights and providing support to consumers, has not only expanded my legal expertise but also deepened my understanding of consumer protection.

ASCO’s mission to support and empower consumers presented a unique and engaging environment for learning. The opportunity to work on a variety of consumer-related issues allowed me to gain practical experience. This hands-on experience was invaluable, as it allowed me to apply legal principles in meaningful ways that directly impact individuals.

During my secondment, I was involved in several key projects that significantly contributed to my professional growth:

Consultation for Personal Injury Discount Rate Review: I participated in the consultation process for the review of the Personal Injury Discount Rate, which is crucial in determining the compensation awarded to personal injury claimants. This experience enhanced my understanding of personal injury law and the complexities involved in ensuring fair compensation.

Law of Apologies: I worked on a project related to the Law of Apologies, which examines the legal implications of offering apologies in the context of disputes and liability. This project deepened my appreciation for the role of apologies in dispute resolution and their potential to facilitate agreeable settlements.

Consultation on MIB’s Removal of Uninsured Drivers and their Access to Compensation for Property Damage: I assisted in the consultation process for the MIB and provided insight into why it is a good idea and a crucial deterrent for the MIB to remove compensation for uninsured drivers. This role provided me with valuable insights into the challenges faced by victims and insurance consumers and the importance of compensation mechanisms.

My time at ASCO was not only about gaining technical knowledge; it was also about personal and professional development. Here are a few key takeaways:

Being directly involved in consumer support highlighted the importance of empathy in legal practice. I gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges consumers face and the role that legal professionals can play in advocating for their rights.

The dynamic nature of consumer advocacy required me to be adaptable and resourceful. I learned to navigate complex situations and to develop creative solutions to address consumer issues within my consultation responses.

Collaboration is central to ASCO’s operations. Working closely with a diverse team taught me the value of teamwork, diverse perspectives, and collective problem-solving.

As I conclude my secondment at ASCO, I would like to say thank you to Matthew, Charles and Ben for taking me under their wing, and listening and challenging my opinions. This experience has equipped me with practical legal skills and enhanced my understanding of consumer rights and advocacy within the legal industry. I am excited to bring these insights back to my role as a trainee solicitor and to continue growing and learning in my legal career. This secondment has been a transformative experience, and I am confident that the knowledge and skills I have gained will serve me well in the future.
