The latest Compensation Recovery Unit data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) was issued to ACSO this week following a Freedom of Information request.
The picture the data paint is of continuing decline in motor claims numbers in particular: nothing startling, but nonetheless the lowest second quarter of the year on record for claims and the second-lowest quarter ever.
The data do not show the cause of this, but it will be in part the product in part of changing behaviours but mostly the result of government reforms such as the 2018 Civil Liability Act.
The latest road-safety statistics do show slight – and very welcome – falls in casualty numbers. However, the falls of 3 per cent in fatalities and severe injuries and 11 per cent in all injury types since 2019 are small compared to the 43 per cent fall in motor claims numbers, from 654,000 in 2019 to 371,000 in 2022.
The conclusion is that while people are still getting injured in regrettably large numbers on our roads, many are not seeking out the redress available to them, including the rehabilitation they might need. In a period of rapidly increasing motor insurance premiums, it is difficult to see how any of this is a win for consumers, especially injured ones.
