ACSO blog: latest CRU data show lowest third-quarter claims numbers ever, and second-lowest quarter overall

Posted on Mon, 23/10/2023

Data from the Department for Work and Pensions’ Compensation Recovery Unit (CRU) issued to ACSO this week following a Freedom of Information request show the lowest-ever number of claims issued for a third quarter, and the second-lowest ever after the last quarter of 2022.

A decline in motor claims is once again the main factor, with just 85,830 claims registered to the CRU against 96,176 this time last year and 169,217 in 2018, a drop of 50 per cent.

Overall, 117,732 injury claims were registered, against 126,366 for the same period in 2022 and only just above the record low of 110,163 recorded in the final quarter of last year.

ACSO executive director Matthew Maxwell Scott said: “While accident numbers on our roads remain broadly static, those claiming for injuries sustained as a result continues to fall, no doubt in large part due to the impact of the 2018 Civil Liability Act reforms.

“The context for this that is impossible to ignore is that of rapidly rising motor insurance premiums, up an average of 40 per cent this year according to comparison site Confused.com.

“Increases of around six times the current headline rate of inflation is something the Financial Conduct Authority must look into as part of its investigation into the government’s whiplash reforms as consumer seem to be paying much more for far less.

“The negative impact on consumers from these types of reforms should also be considered as part of the wider review of civil justice which we are calling for.”
