ACSO comments on the CRU claims data for Q1 2024

Posted on Wed, 17/04/2024

Commenting on the latest data from the government’s Compensation Recovery Unit (CRU), for the first quarter of 2024, Matthew Maxwell Scott, executive director of the Association of Consumer Support Organisations (ACSO), said:

“While it is largely ‘as you were’ for motor claims, with the data showing a small reduction in claims compared to the same period last year, there has been an upwards movement in the number of clinical negligence and public liability claims. For clinical negligence this may be as a result of increased pressures in the NHS exacerbated by Covid, while public liability numbers could reflect the continuing return to normal since the pandemic.

“However, overall claim numbers remain very low by historic standards so we should guard against attempts to ratchet down any further on injured consumers’ rights.”

The latest data – which was obtained following a Freedom of Information request by ACSO – will be the last set before the Ministry of Justice begins a full review of the Civil Liability Act in May this year, three years after implementation, while the government is also due to respond to the recent whiplash tariff review by the end of May. Expectations are for an inflationary increase in the tariff or more than 20 per cent, mirroring recent increases in the recent edition of the Judicial College Guidelines.

Meanwhile the most recent ABI Motor Insurance Premium Tracker showed average prices up 25 per cent in just the last 12 months.[1]
